Old Town

The idea for this series came to me for the first time when I was visiting a township in Durban, South Africa, in 2012. People there used everything to build their small, shabby huts – just as I used every kind of thrash which would do the job for these paintings. This picture returned to me some years later when I was doing an exchange year in the city of Novosibirsk in Siberia in 2015. There you have modern skyscrapers as well as old massive soviet buildings -  but right at the heart of the city there is still an old district with poor wooden huts which are covered in all kind of thrash to protect them from the weather – a Siberian township.
